Local Trail - Kalaru to Tathra

Trail Difficulty: Easy

Kalaru to Tathra

Getting there

The trail is accessed from the center of Kalaru. This description starts at Evans Park, however you can join the path a few hundred metres up the road from the bus stop opposite the service station.

The track

The track is a paved bike path for most of the way and is very easy to follow. Heading east from Evans Park you will cross Sapphire Coast Drive after about 300 metres, before you begin heading up Evans Hill. After 2.6km you will have got to the top of the hill.

From here the track heads into Tathra near the fire shed (3km into your journey). The track continues down to Tathra oval (3.5km) where it joins the road. There are plans to continue the path on the other side of the road past the school, however, for now you continue along the road down towards the iconic Tathra pub (4.8km). If you continue a bit further to the end of the road there is a sealed path which will take you to a viewing platform on the point (it would be a great spot to spy a few whales in the right season).

Difficulty

This a reasonably easy track, although it does contain a big hill. The distance from Evans Park Kalaru to the look out at Tathra is 5.2km. Please be aware that bikes also use this path so stick to the left at all times.

Connections

  • This track is stage 1 of a track which will eventually link Bega to Tathra.
  • There are numerous mountain bike paths heading off to the right of the track between 2-3km. They are not really for runners as the mountain bikes go down them very fast.
  • Just after the service station in Tathra there is a road down to Kianinny beach, form here the Kangarutha track begins which will take you all the way back to Bournda.
  • Towards the end of the track (4.7km) you can head down the side of Andy Poole drive to connect to the bike track which goes from Tathra to Mogareeka, and then on to Moon Bay.
  • At the every end of the track from the look out that path continues on to Tathra Wharf (it’s about 500m further..
